In order to recall a friend request in Facebook that is long pending approval, go to the profile page of the other party and there is a link 'cancel friend request' under the profile picture at left bottom.
This can eliminate unwanted updates from the other party coming on your news feed and eliminate the 'waiting' for approval of a friend request.
